six of the best christmas ads from 2016
From boxer dogs and badgers to Kevin the Carrot. Judging by the buzz on social media and chatter in the office, Christmas advert season has officially commenced. Brands have been embracing the festive feels and launching their 2016 advertising efforts on the world.
We’ve taken a look at 6 of the latest adverts to hit our screens and given you the lowdown on which might make you chuckle and which would bring a tear to even the Scroogiest of Scrooges this Christmas…
1. Marks and Spencer
Girl power. Mrs Claus fills us will all the warm fuzzies. Effortlessly chic, Mrs Claus manages to fool Santa, repair a young boy’s relationship with his sister and get back in time for Santa to return home for Christmas morning.
Somewhere between a Bond scene, Red and Outnumbered, in three minutes you’re treated to epic landscapes, a helicopter ride and some all too familiar family niggles.
Eagle-eyed viewers will spot the ‘Fifty Shades Of Red’ novel on a snoozing Mrs Claus right at the very end. It’s British humour, warmth and elegance at it’s finest. Enjoy…
Imagine re-making Home Alone with an animated carrot called Kevin, and you get the gist of where Aldi are coming from this year.
Kevin the Carrot, accompanied by a warm voiceover from Jim Broadbent, faces his biggest challenge – meeting Santa.
This is a vegetable with a difference. He mounts roast potatoes, braves a close shave with the grater and eventually winds up exhausted next to a mince pie. Will he meet the main man? It only takes a minute to find out…
One of the longest adverts to be released this year, a recognisable voice carries through over three and a half minutes of animated bit of joy.
James Corden sings his way through some of the most relatable scenarios at Christmas, no time, too many things to do and the stresses of how busy everything gets.
In a rather sweet twist, there was such a positive reaction to the song on social media that Sainsbury’s made the song available to download. Here’s the sweet bit, all proceeds are going to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Naaaaw. Worth a shout for Christmas number 1?
4. John Lewis
Arguably the King of Christmas ads, the long awaited campaign from John Lewis is finally here. Choosing to initially tease the public with an unbranded video clip on social media, using only the words #bouncebounce – we weren’t fooled for long. The advert officially launched on 10th November and was a definite departure from the heart string pulling adverts of years gone by.
Humour and some trampoline loving animals steal the show in two minutes and ten seconds, make sure you watch it all for the twist! Buster the Boxer Dog stars as the protagonist of this piece, in a healthy commercial move, he’s also available for £15 online and in-store.
If Christmas really is all about the giving, Very hit the nail on the heart with this years offering. The story follows a mum on her way home from working late in the office, spreading presents in the form of bright pink (nice brand reference) boxes. The more she shares, the bigger her heart grows. You get the picture, right?
Opting for a wonderfully animated advert, with a warm and snuggly message at it’s core, it’s hard not to smile during the 90 second ad.
You’ll need popcorn for this one. Starring Domhnall Gleeson, Sienna Miller, Dominic West and Lily James, this screams blockbuster more than Christmas.
In three minutes and thirty five seconds you’ll go through a journey including science, beautiful design, war, an expedition and a rather glamorous dance scene.
With over six million views and counting, sit back, relax and enjoy this cinematic experience. Just don’t expect too many traditional festive feel good vibes.
