imogen gee: the best thing about working in digital? constantly learning and adapting to new technology
Ever wondered how young people get started in the creative and digital industry? We sat down with one of our apprentices here at seventy7, Imogen Gee to give you a better insight as to how she got into Digital Marketing and any advice she has for people wanting to go down the same route. Imogen was nominated for the MPA Inspiration Apprentice award 2018.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO IT?
I did Media, IT and Photography at college, so I knew I wanted to do something digital and creative and luckily, I found the Juice Academy. seventy7 seemed to tick all the boxes aligning with what I’d worked towards. I got a place here through the Juice Academy boot camp day. I wasn’t against the idea of university, I thought it was good for people who knew exactly what they wanted to do. I was just ready to start creating and doing anything but exams ASAP. The thought of any kind of debt also scared me too but that also makes no logical sense! An apprenticeship seemed ideal for me as I was able to ‘earn and learn’, the common phrase people love to throw about, but in all honesty, it has allowed me to do things I want and continuously learn. Hopefully this route I’ve chosen will allow me to get to where I want to be quicker.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING IN DIGITAL?
It’s always changing and from this comes opportunities that means I can be constantly learning and adapting to new technology.
CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF SUMMARY OF WHAT YOU DO?
I am a ‘Junior Digital Marketing Exec’ (digital marketing apprentice) – I try to cover all aspects of digital, so this can cover email marketing, SEO, social media and some creative bits (mainly utilizing Photoshop). I don’t want to put myself into one category because I want to make sure I’m constantly learning and can involve myself in all conversations across digital.
HOW CAN YOU MAKE YOUR CV STAND OUT?
I would always include the basics. Work experience, successes and qualifications. It shows that you are confident in what you have done, and these can be good talking points in an interview.
WHY DID YOU CHOSE TO WORK AT SEVENTY7?
It aligned with what I had worked with before and what I wanted, offering a creative and analytical role. I was able to still add creativity to a mainly data driven role. For example, I can still utilize my Photoshop skills to create GIF’s for social media and create emails for clients. Alongside learning new skills within the different channels and a million other online tools that I had no idea existed. The office dog (shout out to Barry) and the cool space helped too.
HOW DO YOU ACE THE INTERVIEW?
I think that the most important point is to be prepared. Make sure you memorize previous clients, stats and processes which you can use to help answer questions. Show your personality through your work experiences. For example, don’t just say that you have done this or created that but say why and what you liked about it. Also, show an interest in the company, ask questions about the business and how it operates.
WHAT DO PEOPLE IN THE INDUSTRY LOOK FOR?
Mainly, they will look for someone who fits in with the team. Especially when hiring an apprentice, you need to be approachable and show that you have an interest in learning new skills. If you aren’t an apprentice I would say that this rule still applies, but I would suggest showcasing your previous results and show in depth knowledge about your channel.
